Oliver Langdon, minister responsible for housing, today announced the recipients of nine $750 scholarships awarded by Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC).

Each year, NLHC awards scholarships to high school graduates and adults pursuing post-secondary education. The scholarships are awarded to children of clients, children of employees and adult clients returning to school. Awards are offered on a regional basis — Avalon/East, Central and Western/Labrador.

“I would like to congratulate all of the winners of our NLHC scholarships for this year, as well as all applicants who applied. The pursuit of a post-secondary education takes a tremendous amount of hard work and commitment. A post-secondary education is an important step on the way to achieving their goals. I commend all of the scholarship winners and wish them well in their future endeavours,” said Minister Langdon.

AVALON/EAST
Madonna Dillon, winner of the adult scholarship, is currently attending Memorial University in St. John’s where she is currently enrolled in the pre-social work program. Ms. Dillon was chosen for the award based on an interview that assessed initiative, need, and community and work experience.

Evan Nash, son of Mary Nash, is the winner of an NLHC clients’ children scholarship. Evan graduated from Booth Memorial High School with an average of 81 per cent in level III courses. He is currently attending Memorial University in St. John’s.

Adrianne Power is the daughter of Paul Power, Director of Administrative Services and the Corporate Secretary of NLHC. Adrianne graduated from Booth Memorial High School with an average of 84 per cent in level III courses. She is currently attending Memorial University in St. John’s completing the courses required for first year general studies, with a concentration in French.

CENTRAL
John Rowe, winner of the NLHC adult scholarship, is currently attending College of the North Atlantic, Clarenville campus, and his program of study is carpentry. Mr. Rowe was chosen for the award based on an interview that assessed initiative, need and community and work experience.

Adam Smith, son of Paula Jackman, is the winner of an NLHC clients’ children scholarship. He
graduated from Gander Collegiate with an average of 84.5 per cent in level III courses. Adam is currently attending the College of the North Atlantic in Gander, where he is enrolled in the Computer Support Specialist Program.

Gina Gill is the daughter of Ronald and Verna Gill. Ronald is a Housing Administration Officer in NLHC’s Gander Regional Office. Gina graduated from Gander Collegiate with an average of 88 per cent in level III courses. She is currently attending St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where she is pursuing a degree in English.

WESTERN/LABRADOR
Robin Rennie, winner of the adult scholarship, is currently attending Memorial University of
Newfoundland, Sir Wilfred Grenfell Campus, Corner Brook. Ms. Rennie is pursuing a degree in Fine Arts. Ms. Rennie was chosen for the award based on an interview that assessed initiative, need, and community and work experience.

Victoria Warren, daughter of Angela Warren, is the winner of an NLHC clients’ children scholarship. She graduated from Herdman Collegiate in Corner Brook with an average of 84 per cent in level III courses. Victoria is currently attending Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook, where she is enrolled in her first year general studies.

Steven Duffy is the son of Miriam and Frank Duffy. Miriam is a Clerk Typist in NLHC’s Stephenville Regional Office. Steven graduated from Stephenville High School with an average of 93 per cent in level III courses. He is attending Dalhousie University in Halifax where he is pursuing a degree in Engineering.

Winners of the adult scholarships are selected based on an interview that assesses initiative, need and community work experience.

Winners of the clients’ and employees’ children scholarships are chosen based on their overall average in level III courses. Applicants must achieve a minimum average of 75 per cent in final year high school courses to be considered eligible.
