The Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador have provided conditional approval to 60 private and non-profit sector groups to develop a total of 481 new affordable housing projects throughout the province. A combined federal-provincial investment of $27.9 million, announced in November 2014 through an extension to Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-19, will help support the development of these new homes.
“Private and non-profit organizations make application to this program to assist them in the development of affordable housing. Priority is given to those developing affordable rental housing for seniors, persons with disabilities, persons with complex needs, and people who require supports to live independently in the community. This is in keeping with the mandate of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, and a key objective of both the Poverty Reduction Strategy and the Population Growth Strategy, as we recognize that access to quality, affordable housing remains a challenge for some individuals and families throughout the province.”
– The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation
A list of conditionally-approved projects can be viewed in the backgrounder below.
“Since 2004, approximately 1,120 new affordable housing units have been created throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, through the Investment in Affordable Housing Program. In collaboration with our federal, non-profit and private sector partners we continue to provide a range of housing assistance options that are responsive to the varying housing needs of individuals throughout their lifetime.”
– John Ottenheimer – Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation
The $68 million IAH agreement will also see $41 million invested in the Provincial Home Repair Program, which helps low-income homeowners make required repairs and renovations to their homes.
By the end of 2019, approximately 1,600 new affordable homes will have been created under the IAH program.
“Programs like the Investment in Affordable Housing agreement are vital to non-profit organizations such as ours. As one of the leading providers of affordable housing in the region, this major funding investment enables Anglican Homes to continue our mission of providing affordable housing to seniors of the province and service the increasing demand for such options. It is especially meaningful this year as we celebrate 50 years of caring for seniors.”
– Kelly Manning, Chief Executive Officer, Anglican Homes Inc.
In August 2011, the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador announced an IAH agreement with a combined investment of approximately $40 million for 2011-2014. The new agreement extends that agreement through to 2019. From April 2011 to September 2014, the IAH helped close to 213,000 households throughout the country, including almost 6,400 in Newfoundland and Labrador.
