Renovations to social housing in Happy Valley-Goose Bay continues this summer as Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) advances the 2012 modernization and improvement program. Shears Electrical & Construction will complete $135,000 in renovations on four social housing units on White Crescent in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
“Throughout the summer in communities across the province, renovations to social housing are underway as contractors and NLHC staff continue upgrading work,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “This work provides for renovations and repairs that deliver immediate benefits to current tenants, and will increase the lifespan of units to help meet the needs of future tenants.”
This work is a continuation of the upgrades done on White Crescent over the past few years and will include new siding and exterior wall repairs. Window, doors, and roofing will also be replaced. This work is expected to be completed in October 2012.

Renovations continue in Corner Brook’s Crestview Avenue neighbourhood as the area undergoes a multi-year revitalization plan. Approximately $1.5 million has been invested to continue major renovations on another 52 units over the coming months, including new doors, windows, siding, roofing, fencing, and some interior renovations, as well as exterior painting for 87 units.
“Crestview Avenue neighbourhood is among the earliest public housing property built in the province, and it is quite exciting to see this remarkable transformation,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “These renovations have brought about very positive change. It is very clearly becoming a neighbourhood residents are proud of and there is a renewed sense of respect for the community. Needless to say, we are pleased with the progress being made.”
Since 2008, approximately $6.7 million has been invested in the Crestview Avenue area. By spring of 2013 upgrades will be completed on 60 per cent of the homes. The substantial redevelopment also includes a $889,000 renovation and expansion of Dunfield Park Community Centre.
“I am pleased to see the progress being made in the Crestview Avenue neighbourhood,” said Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West. “This is a very significant project for NLHC, and the work being done here will make a difference in the lives of tenants. The NLHC maintains thousands of rental properties throughout the province and ensures adequate levels of social housing will continue to be available for families with low incomes.”
Crestview Avenue is one of several multi-year redevelopment plans undertaken by NLHC, which includes other older and higher-density neighbourhoods such as Froude and Cashin Avenues in St. John’s.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) has awarded contracts valued at $126,000 to upgrade four social housing properties in the Avalon region.
“This investment will improve daily living for families in these units’” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “Families in communities across the province have benefited from our ongoing modernization and improvement program, and we continue to make great strides in maintaining and improving our vital social housing properties.”
Burnt Head Construction Ltd. has been awarded a contract valued at $68,000 to carry out siding, door, roofing, window, stair, deck, and ramp replacements on a duplex in Carbonear. The anticipated completion date for this work is July 2012.
“Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation has been investing significant funds to enhance older social housing throughout the province, ensuring safe and affordable homes will continue to be available for those with greatest need,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Natural Resources and MHA for Carbonear – Harbour Grace. “Since our government came to power, we have made amazing progress in renovating and enhancing our existing social housing, to the benefit of our tenants across the province.”
Square One Siding Ltd. has been awarded a contract valued at $58,000 to renovate a unit in Heart’s Content and a unit in Victoria. The units will receive siding, door, roofing, window, stair, deck, and ramp replacements. The anticipated completion date for the Heart’s Content contract is July 2012, while the anticipated completion date for the work in Victoria is September 2012.

A resolution reiterating the Provincial Government’s commitment to affordable housing was passed in the House of Assembly on Wednesday, June 20.
“This government has taken a leadership role on the issue of affordable housing and social housing in our province,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “Not only do we invest significantly in our social housing units, we invest in projects with community partners to create comfortable homes for those with low incomes and for those with the greatest need. Through many programs overseen by the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, we help people, especially seniors, stay in their own homes for longer. These programs and services are the cornerstone on which this government will continue to address affordable housing.”
A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador – Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. A key objective for the Provincial Government is to stimulate the development of affordable rental housing by the private, public and non-profit sectors. Through the Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing, 1,133 units will be created province-wide by 2014 with total investment of approximately $67.8 million. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.
