St. John’s – Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC), and Tom Osborne, MHA for St. John’s South, today announced the completion of $100,000 in roofing renovations on NLHC social housing units in Shea Heights.
“As minister responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, I recognize there is a significant demand for modernization and renovations on many of our housing units across the province,” said Minister Burke. “We are committed to providing the highest level of maintenance on our units to ensure safe, quality housing for our clients.”
The work involved major roofing renovations to 14 units in Shea Heights and was completed through a contract awarded to GS Hunt Ltd. The work which began in June and has now been concluded.
Mr. Osborne commented, “I know the local tenants are pleased to have these roofing repairs completed. This project shows NLHC’s commitment in maintaining its social housing properties to the appropriate safety standards.”
The refurbishments are part of NLHC’s annual modernization and improvement plans for its social housing portfolio throughout the province.

Gander – Joan Burke, Minister, Human Resources, Labour and Emploment, Responsible for Housing announced today, that on September 23 – 24, 2005, Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s (NLHC) Board of Directors will join corporate representatives and tenants from NLHC’s non-profit housing community throughout the province in celebrating its 20th annual tenant conference. The next day, September 25th, the board will gather for the 185th sitting of NLHC’s Board of Directors.
“NLHC’s board members are very interested in learning as much as they can about the accomplishments, issues and concerns of the various tenant associations throughout the province,” said Minister Burke. “It is equally important that tenants get to know the corporation’s board members, and the annual tenant conference provides that unique opportunity. By understanding each other’s goals and keeping an open line of communication, we are all more likely to make decisions better suited to everyone’s needs.”
The tenant conference will be held at Hotel Gander, and the theme for this year’s conference is, “Community starts with you!” Approximately 60 tenants representing 30 tenant associations across the province will be in attendance. On Friday evening, Dave Denine, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister Responsible for Housing, will give opening remarks and bring greetings on behalf of Minister Joan Burke.
On Saturday morning, the Community Centre Executive Directors will facilitate two sessions for participants: “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Volunteering” and “Putting the Fun in Fundraising”. Keynote speaker for this year’s conference is Ann Hagan who will facilitate an information session entitled “Life is what YOU choose to make it.” Tenant representatives, NLHC staff and board members will participate in the sessions.
On Saturday evening, six tenant associations will celebrate anniversaries and receive awards from Len Simms, NLHC’s Chief Executive Officer, to mark the occasion. The Dunfield Park Tenant Association will celebrate 30 years; West Heights Tenant Association is celebrating its 20th anniversary; Virginia Park Tenant Association is celebrating its 20th anniversary; Farmdale-Greengarden-Hendon Drive Tenant Association also celebrates 20 years, and the Burin Blackduck Cove Tenant Association will receive a 15-year anniversary award. The conference, which is organized each year by NLHC’s Tenant Relations Officers, will wrap up with a banquet and closing remarks from Mr. Simms.

St. John’s – Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) will spend approximately $82,000 in repair and modernization and improvement projects in the Burin peninsula area throughout 2005/06. Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC), and Clyde Jackman, MHA for Burin Placentia West, made the announcement today.
“With approximately 5,700 units province-wide, NLHC recognizes the importance of allocating budget dollars in the most fiscally responsible manner possible,” said Minister Burke. “The corporation’s planned approach to its refurbishment requirements, helps to ensure that social housing dwellings with the greatest repair needs are addressed first, providing tenants with safe and comfortable homes and, extends the useful life of the properties.”
The work, which began in June 2005, is now finished and was completed by NLHC’s own seasonal modernization crew. The project covers a total of 20 units on Brown and Keats Avenue in Grand Falls-Windsor. The repairs included replacement of exterior doors, windows, eaves, roof sheathing and shingles.
Refurbishments and repairs are being completed on approximately 100 units throughout the Burin peninsula regional office area and include the following:
“I’m very pleased to see this work going ahead,” commented Mr. Jackman. “In addition to the improvements for clients, the investment benefits the Burin peninsula economy by generating revenue to local suppliers, so everyone wins.”
Much of the upgrading began in June and will be completed throughout the 2005/06 fiscal year. The repairs are being completed by NLHC’s own work forces from the Marystown Office. This work is part of NLHC’s long-term preventative maintenance plan whereby each year the condition of all non-profit housing property is assessed, and maintenance and modernization needs are determined.

“This is an extensive project with substantial economic benefits to local sectors of the housing industry,” said Minister Burke. “The continued investment in our social housing portfolio is indicative of government’s commitment to those most in need throughout the province.”
