St. John’s – Extensive upgrading of approximately $337,000 is being undertaken on three non-profit housing complexes in the St. John’s West area of the city. Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation NLHC), and Sheila Osborne, MHA for St. John’s West, announced today.
“This work demonstrates the corporation’s orderly and planned approach in dealing with the maintenance and modernization of its social housing portfolio,” said Minister Burke. “In addition to improving the housing conditions, the area tenants take great pride in their neighbourhood and truly appreciate these improvements.”
“It’s great to see these renovations happening,” said area MHA Shelia Osborne. “And having been in regular contact with my constituents, I know they are also delighted with the work. We all look forward to seeing the end result.” The refurbishments include new vinyl siding, installation of new windows, doors and roofing on an eight-unit building on Salter Place, and roofing work on a seven-unit building on Anspach Street. These renovation costs are approximately $231, 293 and are being completed by Quantum Construction Ltd.
Exterior renovations including new siding, replacement of windows, doors and roofing will also be completed on an eightunit building on Barachois Street. These improvements are being done by Oates Construction Ltd. at a cost of approximately $106,000. Work is now underway on all properties and completion is anticipated by December 2005.

St. John’s – Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC), and Harvey Hodder, MHA for Waterford Valley, today announced a $118,000 contract has been awarded to Eastern Siding Systems Ltd. to upgrade three buildings at Forsey Place in Mount Pearl.
Commenting on the project, Minister Burke said: “These upgrades are part of NLHC’s long-term preventative maintenance plan. Each year, the corporation assesses the condition of all its 5,800 non-profit social housing units throughout the province. This ongoing maintenance and modernization work helps to extend the life and usefulness of the current social housing portfolio,” the minister added.
“I’ll be very pleased to see this work underway at Forsey Place,” said Mr. Hodder. “One’s quality of life is affected by your surroundings, and this project will definitely enhance neighbourhood pride and provide tenants with safe comfortable housing conditions.” The project involves extensive exterior renovations including the replacement of siding, doors, windows and roofing as well as some minor interior renovations on three two-unit buildings on Forsey Place. The work is scheduled to begin in late August, and the anticipated completion date is November 2005.

St. John’s – Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) is providing a contribution by way of office space, to the Learning Disabilities Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (LDANL). Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC), announced today. The Association will be located at 58 Oregon Drive, Stephenville, in the corporation’s regional office building.
“We are delighted to be in a position to partner with an organization that contributes so much to our communities,” said Minister Burke. “Given its social mandate, NLHC is always open to working in partnership with community groups that can contribute to an enhanced quality of life for the people of our province. Current statistics indicate that 10 -15 percent of our province’s population have learning disabilities. Without doubt, providing this office space will prove to be an invaluable resource for many people.”
This opportunity will enable the LDANL to establish Destination Employment, a program which addresses the employment needs of adults with learning disabilities. The goal of Destination Employment is to enhance the employability of adults with learning disabilities by providing targeted employment preparation training. The program also makes employers more aware and sensitive to the vast pool of talented adults who, while they have learning disabilities, are able to make valuable contributions.
The Learning Disabilities Association of Newfoundland and Labrador is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing and promoting education, employment, social development, legal rights and the general well being of people with learning disabilities. They are a provincial chapter of the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada (LDAC), a national non-profit organization founded in 1963. A Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) is located in every province and two territories of the country, and a network of community-based chapters exists in approximately 90 communities nation wide. Destination Employment is offered in partnership by the LDAC and LDANL, and is funded through the federal Opportunities Fund Social Development.
On the west coast, NLHC also provides in-kind office space to two other social partners, the Laubach Literacy Association who also occupy offices at 58 Oregon Drive, and the Community Education Network and Community Action Committee for Southwestern Newfoundland, who operate a family resource centre in Port au Port and one in Port aux Basques. Each of these groups provide tremendous support for the communities they serve.

St. John’s – Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC), and John Ottenheimer, Minister of Health and Community Services, and MHA for St. John’s East, today announced upgrading and renovation work to be completed on NLHC-owned units at Chalker Place.
Approximately $155,000 has been budgeted for this year to complete exterior renovations on one four-unit building, which includes windows, doors and siding. Electrical upgrading will also be completed on three 10-unit buildings to bring the service up to current electrical code requirements.
“I’m pleased to announce funding for improvements to properties in Chalker Place. NLHC staff and the local Community Improvement Tenant Association have worked hard to enhance community life in this neighbourhood, and the building renovations announced today will help to improve the quality of life within the home for tenants,” said Minister Burke.
“As M.H.A. for St. John’s East, I am delighted that this work is beginning,” said Minister Ottenheimer. “I look forward to seeing ongoing work at Chalker Place continue in years to come.”
