Oliver Langdon, Minister Responsible for Housing, today announced that he has received government direction to proceed with the finalization of an Affordable Housing Agreement with the federal government through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
Mr. Langdon said: “This agreement will be good news for Newfoundland and Labrador, and will make a positive difference in the lives of many people. I feel strongly that this investment in housing will also enhance the effectiveness of programs and services provided by my colleagues in Health and Community Services, Human Resources and Employment and Justice. In many ways, suitable housing provides a firm foundation for a healthy society and, this consideration is reflected in the province’s Strategic Social Plan.”
The minister further noted that officials of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) will finalize details of the bilateral agreement with their CMHC counterparts in the near future after which there will be a formal signing announcement. The agreement will address supportive social housing needs and increase the supply of affordable rental housing in areas of greatest need. The province’s contribution will be matched on a 50/50 basis with the federal government through CMHC over the 5-year agreement period.
