Oliver Langdon, minister responsible for housing, today announced the recipients of eight scholarships awarded by Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC).

In celebration of NLHC’s 35th anniversary, this year the value of its scholarships was increased from $750 to $1000. NLHC annually awards scholarships to high school graduates and adults pursuing post-secondary education. The scholarships are awarded on a regional basis to children of clients, children of employees, and adult clients returning to school. The awards cover – Avalon/East which includes areas serviced by (Avalon Regional Office and Marystown Regional Office), Central (Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor Regional Offices) and Western/Labrador (Stephenville, Corner Brook and Goose Bay Regional Offices).

In commenting on the scholarship program, Mr. Langdon said: “I would like to congratulate all of this year’s NLHC scholarship winners, as well as all applicants who applied. Each year, we see a new group of eager individuals who realize the importance a post-secondary education will play in helping them reach their career goals. I applaud all of the scholarship winners and wish them well in their future endeavours.”

AVALON/EAST

Nancy Carey, winner of an NLHC adult scholarship, is currently attending Memorial University pursuing a degree in the Bachelor of Business Administration program.

Timmy Slaney, son of Patrick and Veronica Slaney, is the winner of an NLHC clients’ children scholarship. Timmy graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy, Lamaline with an average of 80.17 per cent in all 3000 level courses. He is currently attending the College of the North Atlantic pursing studies in electrical engineering.

Hannah Moffatt is the daughter of Kate and Gordon Moffatt.  Kate is the Manager of Employees Relations, Human Resources Division, NLHC. Hannah graduated from Holy Heart High School with an average of 83.91 per cent in all 3000 level courses. She is currently attending McGill University in Montreal completing courses required for the Bachelor of Science program.

Curtis Power, son of Albert and Margie Power.  Albert is an inspector with NLHC’s Avalon Regional Office (ARO). Curtis graduated from St. Catherine’s Academy, Mount Carmel with an average of 91.5 per cent in all 3000 level courses. He is currently attending Memorial University of Newfoundland enrolled in the pre-engineering program.

CENTRAL

Ellen Hickey, winner of an adult scholarship, is currently attending Academy Canada  in St. John’s where she is enrolled in the office administration program.

Sarah Perry, daughter of Cindy Hann, is the winner of an NLHC clients’ children scholarship. She graduated from Lester Pearson Memorial High, Gander  with an average of 89.82 per cent in all 3000 level courses. Sarah is currently attending Memorial University, Sir Wilfred Grenfell Campus, Corner Brook where she is completing her first year general studies.

WESTERN/LABRADOR

Erin O’Reilley, winner of an adult scholarship, is currently attending Western Regional School of Nursing in Corner Brook pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing.

Sarah Borden, daughter of Janice Borden, is the winner of an NLHC clients’ children scholarship. Sarah graduated from Herdman Collegiate in Corner Brook with an average of 83.89 per cent in all 3000 level courses. Sarah is currently attending Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook, where she is enrolled in first year general studies.

Winners of the adult scholarships are selected based on an interview that assesses initiative, need and community and work experience.

Winners of the clients’ and employees’ children scholarships are chosen based on their overall average in all 3000 level courses. Applicants must achieve a minimum average of 75 per cent in all 3000 level courses to be considered eligible.
