Students awarded scholarships sponsored by NLHC

Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister responsible for Housing, today announced the recipients of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s (NLHC) Children’s scholarships for 2005.

Each year, NLHC awards a total of six scholarships to high school graduates pursuing a post-secondary education. The scholarships are awarded in the Avalon/Eastern, Central and Western/Labrador regions to clients’ children and employees’ children. Each scholarship is valued at $1,000.

Commenting on the NLHC Scholarship Program, Minister Burke said: “I congratulate this year’s scholarship winners and wish them well in their academic pursuits. They are very deserving scholarship recipients, and I encourage them to continue with their commitment to their post-secondary education.”

The following are NLHC’s children’s scholarship winners for 2005:

Avalon/Eastern Region

Julia Marie Curtis is the winner of clients’ children’s scholarship. She is the daughter of Darlene Curtis and a graduate of Bishop’s College. Julia is in her first year of studies at Memorial University.

Michael Donovan is an NLHC employees’ children’s scholarship winner and is the son of Noel and Karen Donovan. Noel Donovan is employed with NLHC’s Avalon Regional Office. Michael is a graduate of Bishop’s College and is now attending Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook where he is completing a Fine Arts Degree.

Jana Harding is also the winner of an NLHC employees’ children’s scholarship. Jana, a graduate of Mount Pearl Senior High School is the daughter of Craig and Heather Harding. Heather is employed with NLHC’s Avalon Regional Office. Jana is a first year student at Memorial University.

Central Region

Alicia Seward is a clients’ children’s scholarship winner and graduate of Southwest Arm Academy in Little Heart’s Ease. She is the daughter of Gerald and Vera Seward and is currently completing first year studies at Memorial University.

Amy Callahan is an employees’ children’s scholarship winner. She graduated from Exploits Valley High, Maple Division and is the daughter of Joanne Brett. Joanne is employed with NLHC’s Grand Falls-Windsor Office. Amy is a student at the College of the North Atlantic in Grand Falls-Windsor where she is completing the College/Transfer Year.

Western/Labrador Region

Ashley Neary is a clients’ children’s scholarship winner. She is a graduate of Regina High School in Corner Brook and the daughter of Joe and Eileen Neary. Ashley is completing first year studies at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.

NLHC’s children’s scholarships are awarded based on the results of the Department of Education’s Scholarship Score which is derived from a student’s performance on public examinations.
