Renovations Underway on Brophy Place

Revitalization of the Brophy Place neighbourhood in St. John’s continues this summer as Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) awards a contract valued at $188,000 to Newfound Roofing Ltd. to replace roofing on four social housing buildings.

“This government continues to upgrade and improve social housing throughout the province, and the work on Brophy Place is an excellent example of the progress we are making,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “The renovations in this contract are part of an impressive body of work being done to enhance units in this urban neighbourhood.”

This work is part of an overall $1.4 million investment announced in August 2011 to enhance the neighbourhood with a series of upgrades, such as new siding, windows, doors and roofs. The four buildings that will receive new roofing under this contract contain 28 affordable housing units. Work is anticipated to be completed in July 2012.

“I am pleased to see the rejuvenation of this neighbourhood continue with this important project,” said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for Virginia Waters. “Through this investment, the integrity of these buildings and homes will be maintained, ensuring these affordable housing units will continue to serve our tenant families well.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
