New Social Housing in Nain Ready for Families

Families are now moving into new affordable housing in Nain, as Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation has completed a four-unit housing project as the result of an investment of $945,000.

“These new affordable homes give four families the opportunity to live in comfortable and safe surroundings that meet their needs,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “The construction of these units highlights the Provincial Government’s continued commitment to increasing the availability of affordable housing.”

The four three-bedroom units are contained in two single-storey duplexes and have enhanced accessibility through the use of Universal Design standards. Features of Universal Design include but are not limited to step-free entrances, open floor plans, wider doorways and halls, slip-resistant floors, lever door handles, grab bars in bathrooms, and rocker light switches versus toggle. Universal Design is now a mandatory requirement in all affordable housing projects funded in the province.

“I am very pleased to see these new homes completed in Nain,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister for Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. “This investment advances the Provincial Government’s Northern Strategic Plan goal of accessible and effective programs and services that reflect the unique challenges faced in Labrador communities.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future.
